Chapter 8 : The Space Between
“Just go!” They’re both crying in Kate’s apartment. “Please Em, just go.”
Emily stubbornly stood still in Kate’s living room, “No, what I did is unforgivable, but let me fix this. I can fix this. Trust me.”
“You’re the one who said we’ll going through this together, you’re the one who convinced me that we can make this work. A whole-of-this-living-separately thing, you’re the one who convinced me to go to New York, and now you come and tell me that we should take a break? That is bullshit!”
Emily never sees Kate that furious and at that time she saw it and she’s the one who made her mad.
“Please, Emily just leave me alone. If this is what you want, then fine.”
“Kate, please. If I walk through that door, I don’t know when will I see you again. I don’t know if you want to see me again.”
Kate couldn’t even look at Emily, she just wanted to be alone for now. So she went to her bedroom and locked the door, leaving Emily alone in the living room.
Emily couldn’t forgive herself for what she did to Kate, she just wanted to stay there forever until Kate wants to talk to her but she knew that just useless. All she wanted was just holding her and made her pain go away. Oh wait, she’s the one who caused the pain.
‘Shit! I’m screwed!’ she cursed herself. She walked to Kate’s bedroom, “I’m sorry Kate, I love you,” she hoped that Kate would hear her and after that, she walked out from Kate’s apartment.
‘Hi this is Kate, leave a message’ …beep…
‘Hi, it’s me again. Please call me. I miss you. So much.’ It’s been a week since their break up and Kate still hasn’t returned any of Emily’s calls, emails, and texts.
The day Emily got her scholarship to New York, she really wanted to tell Kate, she really wanted to make their relationship worked again. She moved to an apartment around Kate’s neighborhood, she just wanted to see her best friend, soulmate, and the love of her life again but Kate was nowhere to be found. She found out that Kate moved out and she never felt so broken hearted.
It’s raining and she knows how much Kate love rain. She missed how they will cuddling on the couch when it’s raining, just spending time together talking about random stuff or just enjoying a comfortable silent hold each other.
She loves Kate more than she ever loves anything in this world, Kate is her world. Her whole world. She couldn’t handle the guilt anymore. She wished that she can get distracted by her college, but no, she’s always been thinking about that day every day. That day when she broke Kate’s heart was the day she broke their heart.
She tried to keep herself busy every day so she wouldn’t think about it. If college is not enough to keep her busy, then she got to find something else to do. She needs to find a job, a part time job just to keep her busy so she got a job at the coffee shop.
“You can start work here next week Emily,” the owner told her.
“Thanks a lot, Sir,” said Emily and she walked out from the coffee shop and then home. What she didn’t know was that coffee shop was Kate’s favorite place to spend the day.
‘Is that Emily? No. I must be delusional’ Kate said to herself. She misses Emily so much. Even with the fact that she just made her broken heart, deep down inside she still love her. She misses her.
Kate, on the other hand, was just as much miserable as Emily, she’s been pushed to manage her loss alone, nobody understands her like Emily. She’s her other half. Moved out and changed her number was so much not helping her to forget about Emily.
Kate was never a party girl, she only went to a party if Emily was there. The only thing that makes her want to go to a party is she can dance around Emily and to make sure that no one can ever touch Emily except her, not even the jocks want to mess with her.
She can switch the mode from sweet Kate to a very protective Kate when it comes to Emily.
Here she is with her college friends. Partying and she just can help to remember the time she and Emily had when they’re going to a party. They were always a center of attention of course, cause they were both hot and sexy.
‘This really can help at all, I really have to get out from here,’ said Kate to herself and going home.
She then went to her favorite place, she decided to have some coffee and cleared her head. She really needed to get Emily’s out of her head.
It’s raining outside and this was her second cup of coffee. She sat by the window when she saw a girl with brunette hair walked out from a bookstore across the street.
‘Gosh I’ve really been delusional lately.’ She really wanted to go to someplace where she couldn’t find a brunette that looked like her love of her life. But she’s not delusional, that really was Emily who walked out from the bookstore. They’re so close to find each other once again and forever this time.
A few days later when Kate sat alone at her usual spot by the window at her favorite coffee shop, she saw Emily and this time she made sure that she’s not just being delusional.
“Umm hey, Jack, can I ask you something?” she asked one of the waiters there.
“Sure, what’s up?”
“Do you have a new waitress? I saw a girl served a coffee here but I haven’t seen here before.”
“Yes, she just started couple of days ago.”
“What’s her name?”
“Emily. Is everything okay? Why are you asking?”
“Nothing, just curious. Thanks, Jack. I gotta go.”
“Sure. Take care.”
‘That’s her. That’s really her. I miss her so much. I’ll see you tomorrow, Em’ she stole a quick glance at the brunette and smiled. She can’t wait to talk to her again. Maybe this time will be different.
