Chapter 5 : September
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY KATEEEEE!” They all screamed at her. It’s her birthday and Emily have all planned out with the other high school friends. Well, they’re supposed to meet last week at Hanna’s place, but since Kate’s birthday was only a week away, they decided to make a surprise for her and having a reunion together.
“Wow, thanks guys but stop screaming, I don’t wanna be deaf on my birthday,” she laughed and hugged her friends.
“I was really upset you know, when you canceled the reunion last week,” she told Hanna.
“Well, it’s a part of the plan. Emily’s plan actually.”
“You have a plan to make me upset Em?” Kate pouted at her.
“We, that’s not really the plan, but in the end, we all make you happy, don’t we?”
“Well, yeah,” she said while hugging her best friend in a tight embrace.
Kate remembered her 5th birthday.
It’s September 20th and she’d be having her birthday tomorrow. Emily always there to celebrate it with her but this time will be different because Emily was sick, she’s been in a hospital for a week now.
“Mom, is Emily gonna come home soon? Tomorrow is my birthday and I don’t wanna have a party if Em’s not here,” five-year-old Kate is pouted at her mother.
“I don’t know Kate, I’ll ask her mother when is she gonna come home, okay?”
“Okay,” she walked away with her head hung low. She just wanna be with her best friend on her birthday.
Today is the day, it’s Kate’s birthday and her party starts at 4pm. It’s 3.30pm and there’s still no sign from Emily, she ran to her house and knocked on the door but there’s no one home. She feels like she’s gonna crying and she ran back to her house.
“Kate, honey where are you from?”
“Emily’s house is empty, Mom!”
“Oh Baby, she’s still in the hospital, isn’t she? It’s okay. Look all of your friends are here to celebrate your birthday. Let’s have some fun, shall we?” her mom said as she leaned and kissed her forehead.
The party was fun. She got a beautiful Barbie doll from Hanna. The other kids were having fun, but not with Kate. She just wanted the party to be over soon, so she can curl up in her bed.
It’s 8 pm when her mom was knocking at her bedroom door, “Kate, there’s someone who wants to meet you”
“Happy birthday Kate,” Emily said with a shy smile.
“EMILYYY!” Kate ran through her and hugging her tight, “Em, you’re warm.”
Emily just giggled at her friend. She’s still sick actually but she really wanted to be with Kate for her birthday and she had to promise to her parents that she would rest at home until she’s healthy again.
“I’m sorry I’m late.”
“It’s okay, you’re here and it’s all that matter,” she then dragged Emily outside her house, “Let’s see the stars Em!”
They’re laying on the grass, linked their pinkies and just look at the stars. Those were their favorite thing. They used to make a shape from the stars and they can do it for hours.
“Kate, where were you? Are you going somewhere?” Emily tapped Kate’s shoulder,
“I just remember my 5th birthday, when you just come to my house straight from the hospital,” they smiled at the memories.
“Yeah, I have to beg at my father to get out from the hospital you know.”
“I wanna spend my birthday with you Em, I ran to your house but no one’s home.”
“Yeah? You really did that? I’m sorry I make you sad,” she said as she kissed her cheek softly.
“I got you a present,” Emily said as she pulled the box out of her pocket.
It’s a beautiful silver bracelet with a star shape.
“Em, it’s beautiful. Thank you.”
“Not as beautiful as you,” she leaned forward to kiss her.
“Come on let’s join the others. They’re playing twister while Rachel and Hanna do the karaoke,” she took her hand and led her to the living room, where their friends laugh and dancing together.
‘Thank you for this greatest gift for my birthday, God,’ Kate’s smiling and got ready to dance with them.
